Internal Linking for Topic Clusters: A Practical Checklist

How to connect pillar and supporting pages so readers—and search systems—understand your site’s expertise boundary.

Internal links are navigation for humans and context for crawlers. The goal is not “more links,” but clearer relationships: which page is the broad overview, which pages answer specific sub-questions, and which pages show experience (case studies, implementations, data).

A checklist you can apply page-by-page

  • Every supporting article links up to its pillar with descriptive anchor text.
  • The pillar links down to specifics only where it helps the reader’s next step.
  • Related articles appear because they genuinely relate—not because a widget randomizes them.

If you run a title-focused site, link clusters by intent: SEO titles, YouTube packaging, ecommerce listings—then cross-link only at the moments a reader’s job actually spans channels.
